Tick off Bronze, Silver and Gold for... Getting parents and community groups to help in the school garden

26 April 2011 – Lots of parents, grandparents and members of the local community are keen to help out in the school garden or allotment. Taking advantage of their goodwill will see you tick off Bronze, Silver and Gold criteria.

Criteria

• Bronze: We make efforts to actively engage parents and/or the wider community in our growing and cooking activities.
• Silver: We hold events to involve parents and/or the wider community in growing and cooking activities.
• Gold: Our parents/or wider community are actively involved in growing and cooking activities in our school.

Case studies

Skerne Park Primary in County Durham wanted help setting up an organic garden. The school reached out to the local community and was overwhelmed with support from parents and community groups. Read the case study.

Haydonleigh School in Wiltshire asked for volunteers to help out with the weekly gardening club. A group of grandparents were quick to respond, and now the school has 14 vegetable plots, a mini-orchard and a wildflower meadow! Read the case study.
