Tick off Bronze for... Linking farm visits to wider learning

3 May 2011 – Need some help linking farm visits with learning in the classroom? We have lots of resources, including films and activity packs, to help you do just that.

Criteria
• Bronze: We organise an annual farm visit, and this is linked to wider learning.

Resources

Our farm resource page is packed with films, activity packs and fact sheets to help schools make the most of farm visits. Included in the webpage are two new short animated films aimed at secondary school students: 'Eating to Save the Planet' sets out why it's important to eat planet-friendly food, while 'Taking Care of Dinner' introduces the key differences in animal welfare on intensive and organic farms.

Stuffed – as the name suggests – is stuffed with resources and lesson plans for secondary schools. This website sets out debates on the future of food, how food is produced and what impact this has on our environment, society and animal welfare.

Case study

Humphrey Perkins High School in Leicestershire says visits to Manor Farm Long Whatton have increased pupils’ self-esteem, underpinned the school’s approach to Year 7 skills-based learning, and helped broaden the curriculum on the whole. Read the case study.

Awards for schools

The Council for Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC) is inviting schools to apply for its 'Excellence & Innovation’ awards. The awards recognise schools that are providing valuable and positive learning experiences for young people (0-19) beyond the classroom. Find out more on the LOtC website. The deadline for applications is Friday 27 May.
