Tick off the Bronze for… Holding a harvest festival

6 September 2011 – Welcome back. To celebrate the autumn term, you might be thinking of holding a Harvest Festival. By using produce grown in the school garden or allotment to teach children about food production and sustainability, you can tick off three of the Bronze criteria.

Food Education Criteria
Bronze:
We use the topic of healthy and sustainable food as a theme for assemblies
Bronze: Our pupils have the opportunity to grow and harvest food and make compost, and this is linked to wider learning
Community and Partnerships Criteria
Bronze:
We hold an annual event on a food theme four our pupils, parents and the wider community

Resources

This month is Organic September, an annual celebration of all things organic. Find out what your school can do to join in the celebrations. There are so many reasons to love organic, and the Soil Association website has a wealth of resources explaining what organic standards mean for the environment, animals and people.

These teacher and pupil information sheets explore the issues surrounding sustainable food.

This helpful Food Growing Manual has all the information and advice you need to get growing at Bronze.
