Tick off Bronze for... Linking cooking activities with wider learning

8 November 2011 – If you are linking cooking activities with wider learning then you are on your way to Bronze. Cooking is a great way to teach children about the importance of healthy eating and where their food comes from.

Resources

These teacher and pupil information sheets consider what a sustainable diet means, and explore the issues around food, health and the environment.

Focus on Food make some curriculum connections in their blog, and offer free recipes that have been tried and tested in the classroom.

Food a Fact of Life has lots of primary and secondary resources for linking cooking activities to the curriculum.

The Potato Council also has lots of resources, including lesson plans, videos, recipes and worksheets for KS3 Food Technology teachers.

Case study

St John’s Primary in Somerset doesn’t have the space to teach cookery in schools and so uses the neighbouring secondary school’s kitchen. This has allowed them to set up a popular twilight cooking club, create a strong link between the two schools and help children and their parents understand the importance of healthy lifestyles and sustainability.
