Gaia's Garden: Practical skills for sustainable local food
18 Jul 2010 |
Schumacher College The Old Postern Dartington, Totnes, Devon, TQ9 6EA
Participants will hear from a pioneering local organic, low-carbon food producer, who has adopted a minimum-tillage policy. They will also take a guided tour around a forest garden project run by Martin Crawford from the Agroforestry Research Trust. Martin has transformed a 2 acre field into a self-sustaining garden with a diverse number of species that provides a wide variety of fruits, nuts, edible leaves and medicinal plants. Permaculture designer and teacher Rhamis Kent will talk to the group about his work in Detroit, where urban agriculture projects, involving the urban poor and people of colour in growing their own food, are transforming the post-industrial landscape of the city. And there will be the opportunity to work with the Schumacher garden team to see how they tackle the challenge of growing and preparing food for a community all year-round. There will be a number of hands-on sessions including a composting workshop and help with container and raised-bed growing. For booking and more details, please go to the Schumacher College website www.schumachercollege.org.uk
