Food for Life BRONZE Mark

This school is achieving BRONZE

BRONZE schools serve fresh, seasonal school meals prepared by a well-trained school cook. Pupils and parents are involved in planning improvements to school menus and the dining experience via a school nutrition action group, boosting school meal take-up. Every pupil has the opportunity to visit a farm during his or her time at school, and opportunities are given for cooking and food growing activity.

Progress against the Mark

Our Mission

St Gregory & St Patrick's Catholic Community school is Committed to providing high quality food for its pupils and the local community. The school is an in-house provider of meals and is fortunate in that the kitchen is run by two very able trained cooks .The school  has a very high uptake of school meals with over 98% of children recieving a meal. The kitchen also provide breakfast and food for our berfore and after school clubs. The school invites parents from a class inturn to share a meal with their children each week. On Fridays the school cooks meals for the local community and after the meals visitors are entertained by the children through song or dance.Cumbria County Council recognises the school as a beacon of excellence and encourages other school to visit.

The school has plans  to spend £100,000 upgrading the kitchen so that we can become a community facility serving local needs. in 2008 the school intends to make sandwiches for our parents and local people. We already provide traybakes and cakes for local people. In the future the school could provide meals at weekends and holidays.

The School Kitchen is viewed as a central and important part of the school where the principles of food for life are encouraged and positive changes have resulted with  a change in the eating habits of our children who from 2008 will range from age 2 to7. The school links food to the curriculum and we have been recently re-accredited with The Healty Schools Award.
