What is Food for Life Roast Dinner Day?
Every year in November, schools and their communities come together to serve one of the nation’s favourite hot meals – the great roast dinner.
Roast Dinner Day celebrates a hot school lunch, encourages meal take up and shines a spotlight on school cooks and caterers.
This year we are celebrating on Wednesday 11th November - halfway through National School Meals Week.
Why Roast Dinner Day is important
We know things are a little different this year, but Roast Dinner Day is still the perfect opportunity to celebrate hot school food, those who serve it and share food stories in school bubbles.
UK families eat the most ultra-processed diet in Europe and millions of kids are losing touch with where their food comes from. Many of them don’t have the chance to sit down and enjoy a roast dinner with their family. With 900,000 newly registered pupils for free school meals - never has it been more important to promote the benefits of a hot school lunch.
How to share with your community
You could Skype with a member of your local community and share a meal from a distance. Or, you could write to a local care home and ask residents about their favourite memories of sharing a roast dinner. You could even share food stories from around the world while enjoying your tasty lunch.
