A big well done to Stanton Under Bardon primary school in Leicestershire who have achieved their Food for Life Bronze Award!
We were pleased to welcome two members of staff to Food for Life training in January, where they learnt how to cook aloo tikki, potato cakes made with onion and spices. Following training, they took the recipe back to school to teach pupils during one of their food events.
The teacher explained that “it was really important for us to give the children experiences of foods they are unfamiliar with, and it was so much easier to do than I expected. Including setting up, going through food hygiene, safety and knife skills, we were all finished so much earlier than expected.”
Pupils loved cooking the recipe and were excited to sample the spices before they began cooking, with one remarking “it was fun tasting everything first.”
The aloo tikki were cooked in two air fryers, equipment the school have invested in so they can offer more cooking events throughout the year. A staff member shared that “these have made such a difference to how much we can cook. Before we had to take small groups down to another area of the school which meant lots more adults and it took a lot longer.”
Once they were ready, almost all the children dived in to trying the food. “I love them, I wish we could eat them all,” shared one, whilst another stated “I am going to make these at home, my dad is going to love them!”
Others were able to evaluate that their potato cakes were a little too spicy for their liking or they weren’t keen on the texture, stating that it was a little too crunchy. Next time they might put less spice in, eat them with yoghurt or not cook them for quite as long.
All the pupils agreed that they would love to make some dips to eat them with, sharing lots of ideas for what dips they might make.
The remaining Aloo Tikki was shared with parents and the recipe shared on ClassDojo.
