Spring Lane Primary’s Journey to their Bronze Award

Food for Life West Northamptonshire: Spring Lane Primary’s Journey

Spring Lane began their Food for Life journey back in 2023 when the West Northamptonshire (WN) Public Health team committed to transform food culture in some of the most deprived areas of the county.

Since beginning their Food for Life programme journey, Spring Lane Primary school have committed to creating a positive food culture, where health, sustainability and a love of good food has been at the front and centre of everything that they do.

In July 2025, Spring Lane Primary School proudly achieved the Healthy Schools Gold Award, recognising their dedication to promoting health and wellbeing. But their journey toward an even healthier school continued. The school, in partnership with the Food for Life WN team worked hard to transform health across their school and community. Within a mere three months, Spring Lane achieved Food for Life Bronze!

Working towards the Food for Life Bronze Award enabled the FFL WN team to provide dedicated, on-the-ground support to the staff at Spring Lane Primary School. This collaboration empowered the school to create enriching activities and learning opportunities for pupils including:

  • Fit for Life Week: A whole-school event held each June, focusing on healthy eating, active lifestyles and mental wellbeing, engaging every year group from Nursery to Year 6
  • Gardening Club: Pupils take part in over 35 hours of hands-on gardening each year, growing fruit, vegetables and herbs that are later used to cook dishes such as Aloo Tikka.
  • Farm Visits: Children explore where their food comes from, learning how flour is milled, making butter, meeting farm animals, harvesting vegetables and preparing nutritious meals that bring the farm-to-fork journey to life.
  • Catering collaboration: The school has built a strong partnership with its caterers, who work alongside staff in a small but well-equipped food 'pod' located just outside the dining hall.

Spring Lane Primary became involved in the Food for Life award project as part of our commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles, sustainability, and a love of good food among our pupils. We wanted to ensure that children understand where their food comes from, how it is grown, and the importance of making nutritious choices. Through cooking, growing, and linking food education to the wider curriculum, we’ve helped pupils build valuable life skills and a stronger connection to the natural world. We are delighted that our efforts have been recognised, and we are proud to have achieved the Bronze Food for Life Award.
